I want to take this opportunity to share a little of my story. A note my mother sent me a long time ago, still hanging on our refrigerator, reads: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
I experienced this philosophy in action for the first time when my father moved our family from Germany to New Zealand when I was a boy. It was a scary experience to uproot and move more than 10,000 miles away from home, literally to the other side of the world!
I took to New Zealand well, attending school and earning a degree in accounting. It’s commonplace for young Kiwis to leave the country and see more of the world, which is how I found myself in the United States for the first time.
I got my first job here as an accountant with a travel company. One thing led to another, and I ended up staying, building a career in finance through senior roles at Hyatt Hotels, a law firm, and a strategic consulting company.
Corporate America started to wear on me, however, and I elected to leave before I was driven insane. For a change of pace, I founded a home repair company in Benicia with my wife, Dawson. Through our work, I gained deep knowledge of our real estate market.
Between 2005 and 2006, I spent a lot of time in the hospital. When you’re confronted with your own vulnerability like that, you start to think about what you want to do with your life. I was stuck in a hospital bed, but I was determined to turn that difficulty into opportunity.
One of the changes I decided to make was to pursue a career in real estate. It was a great place to start, but my timing was not ideal- the Great Recession began less than a year later. When the market downturn hit, I still wasn’t deterred. When I make a commitment I stick with it, and you already know my stance on difficulty and opportunity.
Buying or selling real estate is an enormously important transaction, and the representation you receive from your agent will have significant impact on your results. I understand well the challenges owners and buyers face, and I invest time to educate each one of my clients and show them how we can win. I signed on with Keller Williams Realty, a worldwide brokerage that matches my mindset and provides me with support and training to keep my skills sharp.
